- I had a concentration in my mind before I took this class, and it was Management because my parents were entrepreneurs and their positions always drew an interest to me. I also was a part-time manager at the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory in Colorado Springs and I loved the business aspect of my job.
- I now have a good understanding of all the concentrations and some other ones that I would choose rather than Management are Computer Information Systems, and Marketing.
- I have not really changed my mind about Management as my concentration. However, if I did choose a different concentration it would be Computer Information Systems because the jobs that are being offered in the future are in high demand. That concentration would be if I absolutely do not like management.
- I am less worried about choosing a concentration now than at the beginning of the semester because I have more information about management, and if anything am more sure that I want it as my concentration. There is really no other information that I need because I am quite sure that management is going to be my concentration.
- All of the speakers were helpful in providing information. The one that provided the best information was Teri Butler for CIS. She was the most active speaker and really knew how to convince me that CIS was the concentration to choose.
- I am a little concerned with having business as a major. After being in college for eight weeks I am not positive that business is what I want to go into. On the other hand, I am not sure what other major I would choose. So, I am going to stick with business until I graduate because it is a great degree to have if I needed it to fallback on. I really like the business school, and how the departments work, but what is setting me back the most is math. I am not the best person with math and am worried about the courses that I am going to have to take because they seem like they are going to be difficult. Regardless of how I feel, I am going to keep my major in business until I graduate.
- I would feel comfortable meeting with a Career Advisor in my Junior or Senior years, possibly even next year, but for now I don't think it is really necessary for me to meet with one. For my Freshmen year, I am just getting a feel for business and am not in the need for a career path right away. Once I get a good sense of what I want, I will feel comfortable with meeting a Career Advisor.
- The information that I received in the class that was most useful was anything about the Career Center. There are a number of things that are available to CSU Students that everyone should take advantage of that can really help with a job once we graduate. I am really looking forward to using the Career Center and the Fairs to help with me with my career.

Business Publication #3 - The Australian
In The Australian's news article, "Heads roll as Hollywood becomes land of the lost box office," the country's movie industry is not producing a profit. Movies are costing more to create and fewer and fewer people are going to see them in the theaters. Because of the loss of profit, Universal Studios and Disney have changed their executives hoping that it will help their movie market. Universal Studios is also being considered by its parent company about being sold, Comcast would be the potential buyer. With all of these changes, the movie industry is hoping to see a change in the output of what is costs to make films, and the profit they get from them.
Business Publication #3 - The Economist
In The Economist's article, "Women, testosterone, and finance; Risky Business," a study conducted by Paola Sapienza of Northwestern University showed that women with high levels of testosterone are more likely to take high risks than women with low levels of the hormone. The correlation is from current testosterone levels rather than from birth. What this means is that if a women has a high level of the hormone, than she is going to be more likely to take a risky job. The hormone also applies to men, but not as significantly. This is in a way why the business world is more male dominated, because women do not usually have higher levels of testosterone.

City Exploration
Boston, MA
Chicago, IL
Seattle, WA
For Boston, MA:
Size-48.4 square miles of land, it is not extremely small or large, it's average, and it meets my criteria for living. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston
Population-The population is an estimated 609,023 in 2008, which fits with my criteria of 100,000 to 1 or more million people. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston
Scenery-From personally visiting Boston, there is not much scenery of mountains, only cityscape and water, which does not fit my criteria.
Transportation-Has a rail system, the MBTA, an airport, Logan International, and highway systems. The average travel time is 31 minutes. This does meet my criteria for a city that I can live in. http://www.cityofboston.gov/transportation/modes.asp
Success-Boston is ranked #90 on Forbes list of best businesses and careers, which is not something I am looking for, I would rather have something more successful, so it does not fit for a city that I am looking for. http://www.forbes.com/lists/2009/1/bizplaces09_Best-Places-For-Business-And-Careers_MetroArea.html
For Chicago, IL:
Size-228.5 square miles, it is on the larger side, but it still fits my criteria.http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_current_size_of_Chicago
Population-in 2000 was over 9 million, so today it can be estimated at over 11 million residents. This is over my 1 million residents so it would not be an ideal city for me to live in. http://www.city-data.com/us-cities/The-Midwest/Chicago-Population-Profile.html
Scenery-I have been to Chicago before, and the main scenery is Lake Michigan and the skyscrapers such as the Sears Towers. I would prefer more land than buildings, so this would not be an ideal place for me to live in.
Transportation-Has two airports, O'Hare International and Midway International, rail system, The CTA, and taxis. This does fit my criteria for transportation. http://www.explorechicago.org/city/en/travel_tools/transportation.html
Success-Chicago is rated number 71 on Forbes list of best businesses, so it is better than Boston, but it is still not that high, which doesn't really fit my criteria.
http://www.forbes.com/lists/2009/1/bizplaces09_Best-Places-For-Business-And-Careers_MetroArea_2.html
For Seattle, WA:
Size-The size of Seattle is 83.87 square miles, which fits my criteria because it is not extremely large or too small. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seattle
Population-The population of Seattle is 582,174, which is between 100,000 and 1 million, so it fits my criteria. http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/Seattle,-Washington
Scenery-Seattle has some great scenery, the Cascade Mountains, the Olympic Mountains, Mount Rainer, and is close to Lake Washington and Lake Union. This definitely fits my criteria. http://www.usatourist.com/english/places/washington/seattle.html
Transportation-Seattle has an airport, Seattle-Tacoma International, taxis, and express buses. This is adequate transportation, without my own vehicle, so it fits my criteria. http://www.usatourist.com/english/places/washington/seattle.html
Success-Seattle is ranked number 17 on Forbes list for best businesses, which puts it way ahead of the other two cities, so it fits my criteria. http://www.forbes.com/lists/2009/1/bizplaces09_Best-Places-For-Business-And-Careers_MetroArea_7.html
Cost of Living:
Denver - is overall 105:95 compared to Fort Collins, and is 11% more expensive. If someone was making $50,000 in Fort Collins, they would be making $55,318 in Denver.
Boston - is overall 128:95 compared to Fort Collins, and is 35% more expensive. If someone was making $50,000 in Fort Collins, they would be making $67,305 in Boston.

From reading the job descriptions, I have learned that all of the job openings require a bachelor's degree in business administration. Another thing that all of the jobs required was at least two years of related experience but the more experience you have the more likely you are to get that job. The jobs would also prefer someone to have an MBA. For me this means that I am going to have to get a few jobs with managerial experience and get my bachelor's degree, and for a better chance of getting a job, go to graduate school. I am going to need a lot of preparation and now I know that a management concentration is not necessarily guaranteeing me a job as soon as I graduate.
Career Exploration
Three possible careers that I could have when I graduate are:
Administrative Assistant
Analyst/Staff Consultant
General Manager
-An Administrative Assistant manages and maintains an executive's schedule, prepare presentations, software applications, general office duties, arrangements for an executive, prepares agendas, and recruit jobs for possible employees.
-To have this career, a four-year degree is almost always required, or a bachelor's degree in business, but for some companies it is not. One has to have the knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures, word processing, managing files, designing forms, a good understanding of the English language, customer service skills, business management principles, human resource modeling, leadership techniques, production methods, and a great understanding of computers. There are no other required certificates or degrees, but an MBA is a good thing to have. One also needs one to two years of job related experience.
-The employment outlook for the next 5-10 years is moderate, there is not much of a need for this career. The projected growth is 14% to 20%, and the factor that will affect the demand for this career is the economy.
-The average starting salary for this occupation is $25,000 and can go up to $60,000 or more.
-Three things that concern me about this occupation is that the job description is basically a secretary, and you are just helping someone with complicated tasks. The demand for the job is not particularly high, so the competition for an occupation like this is going to be tough, and this occupation seems to be more for a big corporation rather than a small business, which is not really what I want to be a part of.
http://www.wetfeet.com/Careers-and-Industries/Careers/Management-Consulting.aspx
http://online.onetcenter.org/link/summary/43-6011.00
-An Analyst/Staff Consultant gathers and organizes information, analyzes data that is gathered and develops alternative methods of proceeding, prepares manuals and trains workers, plan study of work problems and procedures, design and evaluate reports.
-The education that is required for this occupation is a bachelor's degree in business, several years of job-related experience or internships, but a minimum of two years of experience is required.
-The employment outlook for this occupation 21% or higher, which is much faster than average. The jobs are in high demand and factors that would affect the demand for this occupation are the economy, corporations closing, and the availability of graduated students.
-The average starting salary for this is $45,000 and can go up to $75,000.
-Three things that concern me with this occupation as possible drawbacks are the experience needed for it. It will take a few years of other related experience in order to obtain this job, which could become tiring. Another drawback would be if the demand begins to drop because of the economy's recovery, giving people with the experience a better chance to get the job and making the competition tight. The last possible drawback that I would have with this occupation is that is at the bottom of the "professional pyramid," which would make it harder to get higher up and better careers that pay more.
http://www.wetfeet.com/Careers-and-Industries/Careers/Management-Consulting.aspx
http://online.onetcenter.org/link/summary/13-1111.00
-A General Manager oversees activities related to making products or providing services, direct and coordinate activities of businesses or departments, review financial statements, manage staff, prepare work schedules, assign specific duties, determine staffing requirements, determine goods and products to be sold, and plan promotions.
-The education that is required is an associates degree, preferably a bachelors, related on the job experience, and two years training in a vocational school. They need to have the knowledge of business and administrative procedures and principles, customer service and recruitment, economic and accounting principles, great understanding of mathematics, marketing, and administrative and clerical procedures.
-The employment outlook for the next 5-10 years is low. There is little to no demand for this occupation. When the economy recovers, the demand will rise again and more and more positions will become available, because more businesses will open up.
-The average starting salary for a General Manager is $75,000 and the median is $92,000.
-Three things that concern me about this occupation is that the demand is really low. This make the competition extremely tough. Because of the demand being low, more experience is required which is another thing I am concerned with. The last thing that concerns me about being a General Manager is the work load, and the stress that will come with it. They have to manage a department or company and there is a lot of things that go into it, which is just going to build up a lot of stress on someone who is in that position.

Business Publication #2 - BBC News
In BBC News' article, "Cash for clunkers boosts US sales," the US automotive industry saw an increase in sales because of the "Cash for Clunkers" idea. The idea was to have consumers buy more new vehicles and get rid of their old. The program had to end when the funding for it ran out in August, which makes some people skeptical that the market will continue to rise. Instead, they believe that the only reason the market rose was due to the program, and because it is over, the market will decline as it had in the previous months. I am pessimistic that the automotive industry is going to be increasing anytime soon, I fear that the market will continue to fall until new innovations are brought forth and utilized for struggling Americans.
Business Publication #2 - Business Week
In Business Week's "BMW's Push into Electric Cars," the automotive company is looking to the future with the creation of a vehicle that is completely battery powered. The automotive industry is not looking great right now, and it is just going to get worse in the future. BMW knows this and in order to stay a respectable car company, they want to keep their customers in the future with greener cars, specifically electric. There are optimists and pessimists about the idea however, on the upside, people are still willing to pay for a quality vehicle compared to that of Mitsubishi. On the down side, battery prices may not decline, but increase, which would raise the cost of the car. Ten years into the future, people may not be willing to have a high monthly payment for a vehicle that only goes so far on a battery. I love BMW, so when the time comes that America has to rely on electric cars, I am going to buy the BMW over the competition.

Career Fair Evaluation
The two companies that I visited at the Career Fair on Wednesday, September 16, 2008, were Hyatt Hotels & Resorts, and Enterprise Rent-a-Car.
The questions I asked the companies were:
- How great are the salaries for someone working in the company?
- How happy are you with your position? And how does the company rank in competition to others?
Answers I got from the companies:
Hyatt Hotels & Resorts-
- "Depending on which positions are available, anything from $40,000 for a hotel manager position to $100,000 or more for a higher position like general manager."
- "I am satisfied with my position, and it has really opened up great opportunities for me. The hotel company has a lot of competition and is higher ranked among the other chains."
Enterprise Rent-a-Car-
- "The salaries can range but the average for a managerial position, which is what you are looking for, is around $60,000."
- "Having this job has really helped me get farther in my life, and it is a great beginning job. The competition is tight, there are a lot of rental car companies out there."
The hardest part of attending the career fair was the overwhelming number of booths and how many students were looking for these internships or careers. It really made me think about what I should be doing with my education to get a good job.
The next time I go to the Career Fair I am going to have more questions for the recruiters and prepare more by bringing my resumes and looking more professional.
The recruiter taught me that getting involved really is important and looks great for my resume, it may be repeated to me a thousand times, but it's because it really does count to be involved in clubs and organizations.

Business Publication #1 - Forbes
For the article I read in Forbes, "The Best Place for Business and Careers," that really caught my attention. The article is about the top 100 places for business in the country. Ranked number one is Raleigh, NC. This is a good piece of information for me to know because if I continue with my business career, this city would definitely be a place of interest to me. The city that caught my attention the most, with the predictions and results of this article, is that Fort Collins, CO was ranked number two out of the country for a great place to start business. This really interests me because I love Colorado, and if I plan on working for great businesses, or starting my own, I can remain local. The ranking system was based on a number of things, such as the employment, education, and housing, and with all of these in account, Colorado had two metro's ranked in the top ten! This article gives me a little hope with our current standing with the economy, knowing that after I graduate, Colorado can remain my home for business as long as I would like.
Business Publication #1 - Denver Post
I read an article in The Denver Post, "Credit-card companies making a final campus drop," that was quite interesting. In the article it explained how there is now a new policy that will be enforced in February that will ban credit-card companies from trying to "recruit" college students to their cards. Some campuses have already lost the credit-card advertisers simply because of the economy. However, many campuses believe that until February, there is going to be a high amount of credit-card companies that are going to try and retrieve as many students as possible until the policy will take effect. This seems as though it will be an excellent policy because new college students, specifically freshmen, are the targets for these companies. Without proper knowledge, and just the fact that these students are naive, many are going to agree to getting a piece of plastic that will put them in debt for the rest of their lives. That's what credit-card companies want, they would love for these new card-holders to constantly be in debt, because they are making more money. With this policy going into effect, students are not going to be as susceptible to these credit companies, and they will be able to make a wiser decision as soon as they are old enough to get the credit-card.

Concentration Paper
1-Michael Vincent
2-Colorado Springs, CO
3-Corbett
4-Insects, Science & Society; History to 1876; Bus 150; Bus 100; Geology of Earth; Math 117 and 118
5-I am not working any hours right now, but I plan on finding an on campus job.
6-I chose CSU because it was in-state and cheap. My original choice was DePaul University in Chicago, IL, but after a while I realized that CSU was going to be a better choice. I am staying in the state I love, I am still close to family, and the academics are still great and will help me with my careers later on in life.
7- I chose a business major because I want to go into Management and hopefully own my own company. My parents owned their own store and because of that I decided that going into business was what I wanted to do. I love working with money, and with a degree in business and owning my own company, I am hoping that one day I will have enough money to have a large house, own many cars, and have a happy life.
8-I love to spend my free time off-roading in the mountains and on trails.
9-I don't really know anyone from the class, but I do know that there are two people from Corbett that are in the class.
10-I do not know any of the faculty members in the college of business.
11-I am slightly interested in Study Abroad. I think that on one hand it would be an extremely exciting experience, meeting new people, and learning about a new culture. On the other hand, it would be harder to transition from American education to another country's. Also, you are farther from home and you would most likely not know anyone.
12-
Business Week-have heard of it but don't read it
Fortune-have heard of it but don't read it
Forbes-have heard of it but don't read it
The Economist-have not heard of it
BBC-have heard of it but don't read it
Denver Post-have heard of it but don't read it
Forbes Small Business-have heard of it but don't read it
Wall Street Journal-have heard of it but don't read it
13-What are the benefits of choosing my concentration as Management?
Part 2-
When I think about what I am good at, the first thing that comes to mind is that I am very persistent with what ever I am doing. If I am working on a project, or just hanging out with my friends, I am adiment on getting things done. This would be a good strength for working in management becuase if there is a deadline or something similar to that, I would get it done as quick as I could. Other things that I come to mind when I think about what I am good at is talking, spending, and being friendly. Talking would be a good strength for my concentration because it would help with customer ineraction. I would always be able to talk to customers and have real conversations with them which would help in sales because I am not strictly trying to have them buy my product. Being friendly is another strength that would go hand in hand with talking because I would be able to talk to my customers and employees with confidence, not being shy or being mean, and really making them feel welcomed and not being pushed. Weaknesses that I would have while going into business is that I am sometimes impatient. Being impatient would not help me if I am trying to sell a customer a product, because if they do not want to buy right away or want to think about it for a while, I would not give them adequate time to make a decision. Another weakness that I would have when going into business management is that I am a perfectionist. Having this attribute is not always great because sometimes it's ok if everything is not going the exact way that I would like it, and it's okay to make mistakes.
I am not considering Accounting as my concentration because I am not the best with numbers. I know that in accounting or being an accountant, numbers are essential. I am also not really interested in accounting because I don't know that much about it. I know about the numbers, but that is really it. Information that I would like to know about accounting is what exactly it entails. What careers are offered with accounting degrees? How much money would one make? What are good qualities to have? With those questions answered I would be able to make a better decision on if I still don't want Accounting as my concentration.
I am considering Management as my concentration as of right now. I love being in charge and knowing what is going on. I am an excellent leader and joined many clubs in high school where I was the manager or commissioner. When I was working at the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory in Colorado Springs, I became an assistant manager for a few weeks. It fascinated me about all the things that go into being a manager. It is not just bossing employees around. There is paperwork, communications, ordering, scheduling, etc., that are all things I enjoyed. Questions that I have about management as a concentration is how successful can one be with this? What opportunities are available? and what careers are opened up to a person who graduates with this concentration?
Marketing is a concentration that I would change to if I were not going for management. I would choose this as a second choice because I feel that this is something that opens up a lot of careers that pay well for someone. I like to know about markets and money, but am still not that great with numbers, so this is the main reason I am not choosing this as my concentration. If I become a little better with numbers I might consider changing to marketing. Questions I would have about this concentration is what is available for someone in marketing? and how far can they get with this as a concentration?
I am not considering Computer Information Systems as a concentration because I really don't know anything about computers. I also don't much about this concentration which raises a lot of questions for me. What careers are offered? How much could you make? What exactly would you do? Does it require a lot of math skills? What are good qualities to have if you are going to have this as a concentration?
Finance is another concentration that I am not considering because I am not entirely sure what is available with it. I am unsure about careers that are available, and how much you could make. I am also horrible with my own finances that I would most likely not be great at dealing with other peoples' finances. Questions about finance is what one does with this degree? What are the careers that are available with finance?
Real Estate is a strange concentration to me. It has to be a lot more work than just knowing how to sell a house or other building. With that in mind, I would like to know more about real estate. If the concentration that I have chosen for now fails or I turn out to not like it, real estate is something that I would definately consider. I love houses and I love selling, so this could be a great thing to choose, but because I am not sure about all of it, I have questions. What all is offered in real estate? What are classes that should be taken? What are the available careers, and how much does someone in real estate typically make?
My four letter are ESFJ. Careers that it suggest I might be interested in is teaching, nursing, real estate, physician, and respiratory therapist.
My two colors are yellow and green. The careers it suggest to me are accountant, astronomer, small business owner, consultant, and food service manager.
When I took the two quizzes I learned a lot about myself that I have never considered. I now look at myself as the guardian and realize that I actually do have a lot of the attributes of what the two tests described me as. I do like to take control and provide for the general welfare for people, which is why I am described as the "provider". They also suggest that someone of this type can sometimes be easily wounded, and act off of those emotions, which in a lot of cases I actually do, but I never realized it. I agree with the tests in that this is the way I typically think of myself. I see me as a provider and I enjoy taking care of people, even if it is a different career from management.
The personalities do not really match the careers I was thinking about. I am looking more for a general manager or supervisor, but they are suggesting eduation and health. Small business owner was listed as a possible career which is not too far off from what I would like to do, but I have never considered going into elementary teaching or becoming a nurse. I do like helping people though, and those would be pretty fun careers if I decided to take that path. By taking these two personality tests they opened up a couple new ideas for me and choosing my concentration. One of concentrations that I may look into is real estate because it suggested that as a possible career for me. Accounting is the other concentration that I may look into because of the careers it listed, but management is still the concentration that I would like to stick with.
My WHY Factor
I am in college because it is almost impossible to be successful in America without a proper education. It is my goal to be successful and to support myself and a family. I have a rich taste and love exotic and expensive things. I plan on living in a large beautiful house, own many cars, and have a high paying job, or own a company. The reason I study for assignments and exams is because I do not want to fail. No one in my family has completed college, and I plan on being the first, which is why I want to succeed in all of my classes. I want to be in business because I enjoy being in charge. I am planning on going into management, I love being in charge and taking the lead. I plan on staying in business until the end when I graduate because I will not fail. I will succeed and live a wonderful and happy life.

Dream Locations
I have lived in Colorado my entire life and I could not imagine living anywhere else. There are five factors that I would consider when choosing exactly where I would like to live in Colorado.
The first factor I would consider is scenery. I love nature and especially the mountains. With that in mind I would choose a place in Western Colorado because it offers the best of the state and that is where the mountains are most prominent. I would also enjoy living on the front range of the mountains, stretching from Colorado Springs up to Fort Collins. These cities also have beautiful scenery and offer more career wise.
Another factor for me to consider in choosing a location is population. I prefer a medium to large city over a small town. With that in mind while staying in Colorado, I would choose any city with a population of 100,000 citizens to 1 million, which includes Fort Collins down to Colorado Springs. With a larger population there are more opportunities for finding a career, which is something that would be extremely important to me. I also enjoy being around more people than living in a small mountain town where there is hardly anyone around you.
Along with population and scenery, transportation comes to mind. If I am going to live in a large town and have my career in business, I am going to need forms of transportation that are always close. The airport is the most important, but a train depot or even having my own car is important. Having my car would enable me to travel around whichever town I am in if I am doing business locally. A train as a form of transportation is not as important to me because it is not a quick way to get from place to place. The airport is most important because I can get to anywhere in the U.S. within four hours or less. If I am going to be living in Colorado, I am probably going to want to be close to Denver International Airport so that I may leave anytime that my career requires.
Size is another factor that I would consider in a dream location. I like large populations and large cities, so when considering size I would like a place that is not entirely spread out so that it does not take an hour to get from one side of the city to the other. I would rather enjoy a city that is large, but one that still has easy access to everything the city offers, including places that I would do businesses with. Colorado Springs is not a city that has everything to offer in easy access. The city is spread out and it takes time to get from one place to the next, Denver is also similar to the Springs, but it also has parts of the city that makes it easy to get where you need to go. So when considering size, I would choose Denver.
The last factor I would consider with my dream location is how successful the cities are with business. I would have to research how much the cities profit with businesses and why they are doing so well. If the city is doing well in in profit with small business I would definitely consider that location over one that is profiting in corporations that are running the small business out of town.
With all these factors in mind, scenery, population, transportation, size, and profit, I would most likely be living in Denver, Colorado or a suburb of Denver.
